"Anabolic steroids" is the familiar name for synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones (androgens). They promote the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects), and also have some other effects. The term "anabolic steroids" will be used through-out this report because of its familiarity, although the proper term for these compounds is "anabolic-androgenic" steroids.
1. Result in health problems
Like most drugs, steroids and other forms of PEDs also have side effects. Used for a long period or when abused, PED can result in increased cholesterol levels, liver damage, mood swings, hypertension, aggressive behavior, irregular heartbeat and other heart problems. This is probably because of some of its content, which all have pros and cons. Stimulants, for example, stimulate overall mental alertness and increase competitive response. But it can also lead to addiction, brain hemorrhage, and heart attack, among others. Beta-blockers, on the other hand, will reduce muscle tremors, but can reduce performance abilities as it can cause fatigue, reduced heart rate and sleep disturbances.
